Ranveer Singh - Pawan Kalyan
The Telugu box office has been going through a difficult phase in recent weeks. After the festive success of Sankranti, several films released in theatres failed to generate strong collections, resulting in low footfalls and weak occupancy across many cinema halls.
Exhibitors and distributors have reportedly faced losses as audiences stayed away from theatres. Many buyers who had invested heavily in acquiring distribution rights during this period were unable to recover their costs due to poor box office performance.
Because of this prolonged slowdown, the industry has been eagerly waiting for a major release that can attract audiences back to cinemas.
The trade is now pinning its hopes on two highly anticipated films releasing on March 19 — Dhurandhar: The Revenge and Ustaad Bhagat Singh.
The spy action thriller Dhurandhar 2, directed by Aditya Dhar, stars Ranveer Singh in the lead role. The film is the sequel to a successful first installment and has generated massive buzz ahead of its release. It will also have premiere shows on March 18 evening, giving it an early start at the box office.
On the other hand, Ustaad Bhagat Singh is a commercial action entertainer starring Pawan Kalyan. The film is directed by Harish Shankar, marking their reunion after the blockbuster Gabbar Singh.
Both films carry huge expectations and are expected to attract large audiences during their opening weekend.
Another major advantage for these releases is the favorable festive period. The films are arriving around the time of Ugadi, along with the festive season of Ramzan and Sri Rama Navami.
Festive holidays traditionally help boost theatre footfalls and often lead to strong box office collections, especially during long weekends.
Additionally, student examinations in many regions have recently concluded, allowing younger audiences to return to theatres. With the summer season approaching, cinema visits typically increase as families and students have more free time.
With two major releases arriving together and several favorable factors supporting them, the trade believes March 2026 could become an important turning point for Tollywood’s theatrical business.
If Dhurandhar 2 and Ustaad Bhagat Singh perform strongly at the box office, theatres in the Telugu states may finally see a revival in audience turnout and box office collections after weeks of underperformance.
Industry observers will now closely watch the opening weekend numbers to see whether these films can restore momentum to the Telugu box office and bring audiences back to cinemas.
