Adding to its dominance, exhibitors have increased the screen count by adding 10 more screens, and IMAX screens have also been reinstated, further boosting its theatrical presence.
With this, Project Hail Mary has reached a massive $269.8 million total at the North American box office.
The film is now just under $13 million away from surpassing Dune 2’s domestic total of $282.1 million. Given its current pace, this milestone is expected to be crossed within the ongoing weekend itself.
Reports suggest that Project Hail Mary is tracking to earn between $19 million and $22 million during its 5th three-day weekend. If that happens, it will comfortably go past Dune 2 and also surpass Gravity, marking a significant achievement for the film.
The film’s success is being fueled by its strong emotional core and engaging storytelling. The bond between a human and an alien has struck a chord with audiences, while the blend of real science and thrilling narrative has added to its appeal.
This combination of heart and spectacle is ensuring repeat value and consistent footfall, even in later weeks.
At the North American box office, the film stands at $269.8 million. Internationally, it has collected $268.5 million, taking the worldwide total to a huge $538.4 million.
Project Hail Mary follows the story of a science teacher who wakes up alone aboard a spaceship with no memory. As he slowly pieces together his mission, he realizes he must save Earth’s sun from a mysterious threat, with help coming from an unexpected interstellar friendship.
The film was released on March 6 and has been enjoying a highly successful theatrical run since then.
With a powerful hold, minimal drops, and strong weekend projections, Project Hail Mary is on track to enter the $300 million club in North America.
